Asclepias linaria (Pineleaf Milkweed)
Nativity: Native to the Americas, from the southern U.S. through Mexico and into South America. In Arizona, it naturally occurs in the southern portion of the state, including the Tucson region—especially in canyons and desert riparian areas.
Ecology: Commonly found in washes, roadsides, rocky slopes, and other disturbed areas. Thrives in sandy or gravelly soils and responds well to summer rains. A critical larval host plant for monarch and queen butterflies, and a valuable nectar source for native pollinators.
Elevation: Below 4,000 ft
Size: Upright to loosely branching perennial, typically 2–4 ft tall and wide
Flowering Duration: April – October, with peak blooms following monsoon rains
Sun/Shade Preference: Full sun to part shade
Foliage Duration: Perennial; may go semi-dormant during winter or extended drought
