Nativity: Native to southern Arizona and Texas through Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and northern South America. In Arizona, wild populations occur primarily in the southern part of the state.
Ecology: A wild chile and the progenitor of domesticated Capsicum annuum. In southern Arizona it naturally occurs in canyons and protected, often shaded sites, frequently growing beneath or among nurse plants such as hackberries. Its small red fruits are eaten and dispersed by birds.
Elevation: 1,000–6,000 ft in Arizona.
Size: Typically 2–5 ft tall and wide in cultivation; can reach about 6 ft tall in protected natural settings.
Flowering duration: Summer into early fall; Arizona flora records flowering primarily August–September, while cultivated plants may flower April–August.
Sun/Shade preference: Part shade to shade, especially in the low desert; naturally benefits from the protection of nurse plants.
Foliage duration: Perennial; frost-sensitive and may die back or lose foliage following cold weather.
