Nativity: Native to the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, southeastern California, Baja California, Baja California Sur, and Sonora, Mexico.
Ecology: A slow-growing, extremely drought-tolerant desert tree found in desert washes, bajadas, and rocky slopes. Ironwood is an important nurse tree, providing shade and protected growing conditions for young desert plants. Its lavender to pink, pea-like flowers provide resources for native bees and other pollinators, while its seeds are eaten by wildlife. The dense canopy also provides valuable shelter and nesting habitat for birds.
Elevation: Below 2,500 ft
Size: Typically 15–25 ft tall and wide, occasionally reaching 30 ft or more
Flowering Duration: April–June
Sun/Shade Preference: Full sun
Foliage Duration: Evergreen to semi-evergreen; may shed some or all foliage during extreme drought or cold
