Product Details
Nativity: Native to Mexico, southern Texas, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
Ecology: A perennial shrub with fragrant foliage and clusters of lilac to purplish-blue flowers. The nectar-rich blooms attract butterflies and other native insects, making it a useful pollinator plant. In Tucson, it can function as an evergreen shrub but may freeze back during colder winters.
Elevation: In its documented U.S. native range, generally 0–100 ft; however, it performs well in cultivation in Tucson despite occurring naturally at much lower elevations.
Size: 3–6 ft tall; stems form a spreading, arching shrub.
Flowering duration: Late spring through early fall in Tucson; elsewhere in its native U.S. range, flowering is primarily October–December and can occur nearly year-round.
Sun/Shade preference: Full sun to light shade.
Foliage duration: Usually evergreen in Tucson; may lose foliage or freeze to the ground in colder locations.
