Nativity: Native throughout much of North America, including Arizona and the southwestern United States.
Ecology: A warm-season perennial bunchgrass found in grasslands, prairies, open woodlands, and dry rocky slopes. Its dense clumps provide cover, nesting material, and seeds for birds and other wildlife, while the foliage serves as a larval host for several skipper butterflies.
Elevation: Approximately 3,000–8,000 ft in Arizona
Size: Typically 2–4 ft tall × 1–2 ft wide
Flowering Duration: Summer–fall, generally July–October
Sun/Shade Preference: Full sun to part shade
Foliage Duration: Perennial; warm-season deciduous — foliage dries to an attractive coppery or reddish-brown color in fall and persists through winter before new growth emerges in spring
