Nativity: Native to the Sonoran Desert and other arid regions of Mexico and South America. In the Sonoran Desert, it occurs naturally in Sonora, Mexico; it is not native to Arizona, although it is widely grown in Tucson landscapes.
Ecology: A drought-tolerant small tree with distinctive smooth, lime-green bark and an open, sculptural canopy. Bright yellow flowers provide nectar and pollen for native bees and other pollinators. Its canopy can also provide shade and shelter for birds and other wildlife.
Elevation: Generally below 4,000 ft
Size: Typically 15–25 ft tall × 15–25 ft wide
Flowering Duration: Spring, typically March–May; may bloom again following summer rains
Sun/Shade Preference: Full sun
Foliage Duration: Drought-deciduous; small leaves may be shed during dry or cold periods, while the green bark continues photosynthesis
