Epilobium canum (California Fuchsia)
Nativity: Native to the southwestern U.S., including parts of Arizona, and widespread in desert and chaparral regions. Well-adapted to Tucson landscapes, especially in well-drained soils.
Ecology: Found on rocky slopes, hillsides, and in disturbed areas. A standout hummingbird plant, its bright red tubular flowers provide critical nectar during late summer and fall when other blooms are scarce. Great hummingbird and butterfly nectar source, moth larval source, showy blooms.
Elevation: 3,000 – 6,000 ft
Size: Low, spreading shrub- 3x4'
Flowering Duration: Late summer through fall, often triggered by monsoon rains
Sun/Shade Preference: Full sun to part shade
Foliage Duration: Herbaceous perennial; may die back in winter and re-emerge in spring
